1) Represent indigent Defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors if penalty for crime carries possible jail time.

2) Court determines if Defendant can financially hire his or her own attorney or is indigent. If indigent, the Court appoints.

3) The Public Defender's office may not represent as Public Defender prior to court appointment.

4) Represent juveniles in delinquency cases and status offenses, and parents in child abuse and neglect cases.

5) Represent persons brought before the Mental Health Board as dangerous to self or others.

Legal services are provided cost-effectively while ensuring that the county criminal justice system operates efficiently and achieves just results for Public Defender clients as much as possible.
